Objectives:
The High Performance Computing Advanced Core (NACAD) of COPPE / UFRJ is a specialized laboratory in the application of high performance computing engineering problems and science in general, and other areas of knowledge. The NACAD activities are focused on three main lines:
- - Research and development conducted by the team of NACAD researchers and users of its high performance computing services;
- - Computer support to teachers groups and researchers of the different programs of COPPE, UFRJ, other state institutions of Rio de Janeiro and other states;
- - Training of human resources through regular graduate and undergraduate courses, short courses on specific topics and specific courses related to the use of the equipment NACAD.
The NACAD is part of SINAPAD (National System for High Performance Processing) thus becoming its Specialized Service Laboratory Engineering.
Historic:
Since 1988, COPPE has been developing activities in high-performance processing in the areas of hardware and software, supported financially by FINEP, as well as other sources such as CNPq, FUJB and production companies.
This initiative, one of the pioneers in the country, resulted in the construction of parallel machines prototypes as well as the generation of software applications in key engineering areas.
Because of this experience and the organization of the National System of High Performance Computing (SINAPAD), created the Care Center for High Performance Computing (NACAD) of COPPE / UFRJ in February 1995, with the installation of mini-supercomputer CRAY EL94 and 12 workstations SUN Sparc 20. NACAD works on the premises of the complex I2000 UFRJ Technology Center. The NACAD installation project received support from FINEP and is part of SINAPAD, along with the other High Performance Processing National Centers (CESUP / UFRGS, CENAPAD / SP-Campinas, CENAPAD / RJ-LNCC / CNPq, CENAPAD / NE -FUNCEME / EC CENAPAD-AMB, CENAPAD-MG / CO).
